What to Expect From Remote Therapy Sessions

Virtual therapy can provide a safe and private environment for clients to openly communicate with their counselors. It can also be convenient for those living in remote areas, as it eliminates the extra stress of driving long distances to get to an in-person session. It can even be more affordable than traditional in-person sessions, depending on insurance coverage and provider fees.

In addition, some therapists offer Remote Therapy Sessions Ontario telehealth services  on an ongoing basis as part of their practice, so clients can receive regular support over time. Some providers have specialized expertise in treating certain disorders, and use evidence-based practices to help clients overcome their struggles. For example, many therapists specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT, Diagnosis-Specific Treatments DBT, and/or Trauma-Informed Care.

What to Expect

Many patients feel nervous about their first teletherapy session, and may have questions about how the process will work or what to expect from their counseling experience. It’s important for clients to be open and honest with their counselors, and to bring up any concerns or worries they have. It is also helpful for clients to make a list of questions ahead of time, so they don’t forget any important information during their session.

Some therapists have specific policies regarding the use of video sessions, including whether they will accept a client’s insurance and what their payment policy is. Others have a flexible approach and are willing to accommodate any needs their clients may have.

As with in-person counseling, it’s essential for clients to find a comfortable space and prepare in advance of their session. It’s often recommended that they test out the teletherapy platform before the appointment, so they’re not caught off guard by any glitches or have to worry about their technology going awry during their session. Likewise, it’s helpful to create a dedicated “therapy room” in their home, and to keep the area clear of distractions so they can focus on their counseling experience.

It is also a good idea for clients to block out their calendars for the time of their appointment and to set aside any other necessary materials, like a journal or pen. It’s also a good idea to block out the time for their appointment, and to ensure that they won’t be interrupted by other family members or friends. Some therapists have found that white noise machines can be a great way to block out any outside distractions and promote privacy during a teletherapy session.

While a client’s home may be considered a private and secure space, it’s important to identify any potential issues that could arise during their session. It’s also a good idea for them to test out their audio and visual settings in advance, and to give themselves plenty of time to log in before the session starts. Lastly, a therapist might recommend using headphones to further enhance the client’s privacy and comfort during the session, or to consider using a white noise machine to further prevent eavesdropping.
